Dial-Up, Denim, and the Northside Eagles

Dial-Up, Denim, and the Northside Eagles: October 15 in the Y2K Era If you were roaming the halls of Northside High School on an October 15th somewhere between 1996 and 2006, you probably smelled like an aggressive mix of Bath & Body Works Cucumber Melon and raw teenage angst. We didn't have smartphones to distract us during fifth period; we had TI-83 calculators that we exclusively used to type dirty words upside down. The Northside Eagles were busy dominating the gridiron—like the legendary 2001 squad that stormed through a perfect 9-0 regular season—while the rest of us were just trying to survive the sheer panic of hearing our dial-up internet connection drop right as we were about to send a crucial AIM message. It was a simpler time in Warner Robins, a time when a puka shell necklace was considered peak high fashion and getting tickets to the Friday night game required the kind of cutthroat negotiation tactics usually reserved for hostage situations. Meanwhile in Geor...

Friday Night Lights and T9 Typing

Friday Night Lights and T9 Typing: October 16 at Northside High If you were wandering the halls of Northside High School on an October 16th between 2006 and 2016, you were living in a golden era. You probably had a side-swept bang that required serious structural engineering, a wrist full of Silly Bandz, and a Motorola Razr that you could dramatically snap shut when you were mad. You were also secretly mastering the art of T9 texting from inside your pocket so the teacher wouldn't confiscate your phone during third period. But the real focus was always Friday night. This was the era of the Northside Eagles' absolute dominance, with the boys bringing home state championships in 2006, 2007, and 2014. We packed the stands at the Mac, screamed until we lost our voices, and then went to Waffle House to recap every single play over scattered, smothered, and covered hashbrowns. Meanwhile in Georgia History On October 16, 1973, Atlanta made massive historical waves when voters el...

Northside Alumni Blog : On March 15th in Northside History

Today is March 15th. Beware the Ides of March. But mostly beware an Eagle with a grudge. We have the history. We have the receipts. Here is what actually happened in the land of Blue and White. 1974: The Volcanic Valor of Gary Miller The Science Fair was a war zone. Gary Miller brought a mountain. It was made of paper-mâché and hope. He added way too much vinegar. The eruption hit the ceiling tiles. Principal Matthew Arthur was not amused. The smell of acetic acid lingered. It lasted through the spring prom. Gary didn't get the blue ribbon. But he got a standing ovation. We outperformed the Demons in raw chaos. Their volcanoes were mere molehills. Northside chemistry is simply more explosive. 1988: The Tennis Odyssey of Mike Scarborough The wind was howling at 40 mph. Mike Scarborough stepped onto the court. He faced a rival from Macon. Mike tossed the ball for a serve. The wind took it on a journey. It cleared the fence on Tabor Drive. It likely landed in a Peach County orchard. M...
